A great way to get children interested in a new topic is to talk about what is happening around them. Recently, I used a very popular holiday to teach English. Easter is a holiday that has a lot to offer in terms of language teaching. When teaching kids, we can use the Easter bunny to teach vocabulary. When teaching pre-teens and teens, we can create projects in which learners can compare Easter celebration in their own country to other countries and discuss cultural aspects/differences that should not be avoided in a language classroom. When teaching adults, teachers have the chance to create activities in which learners can talk about their plans for the holiday, for instance. This first post has a video/song to be used with kids. You can start by showing the video without the sound and pausing to present the new vocabulary (bunny, carrot, long ears, nose, tail, hop, flop the ears, shake, etc...). Select the vocabulary according to their age/level. After presenting the new vocabulary and the video with the sound off play it for them to watch and sing. After that you can play "Simon says" with the new vocabulary (Simon says to shake your hands, to hop, to dance, to flop your ears, etc.. ) Now, they are ready to sing and dance like the bunny!!!
