We do not have the "th" sound in Portuguese. Because of that, the "th" sound can be difficult to articulate for some students. So, this post is to help learners to understand and practice the "th " sound. The "th" has two different sounds in English. One of them is voiced ( the vocal cords vibrate) and the other is voiceless (the vocal cords do not vibrate). Something that really helps students is to understand the point of articulation of the sound. To produce the two "th" sounds our tongue should touch the upper teeth or be placed between your teeth, just like the picture above. Let's practice? Watch the video and practice!
Now, watch the video with Alanis Morissette. Observe her mouth when she sings the words : THoutht, THat, THick, THe, THings, THanks.
